How to find the court handling your Texas traffic ticket

Identify your municipal or county JP court, find the right precinct and official website, and request driving safety course instructions.

Read the court name on your citation

Start with the citation or the most recent notice from the court. Look for the court name, its contact information, your citation or case number and the appearance date. The city where you live and your current location do not determine which court handles the case. Keep the original notice so you can compare every detail when opening a case portal.

A municipal court name identifies a city court. A Justice of the Peace entry also needs the county, precinct and, where used, place. A bare label such as JP Precinct 1 Place 1 is incomplete without its county. Ask the issuing agency or the court listed on the notice when the name is unclear.

Distinguish a city court from a county JP court

Houston Municipal Court and Harris County Justice of the Peace courts maintain separate case processes. The same distinction applies to San Antonio Municipal Court and Bexar County JP courts, and to El Paso Municipal Court and El Paso County JP courts. A similar location name does not make their forms interchangeable.

El Paso County directs defendants to the JP precinct office noted on the citation. Collin County also states that the JP court listed on the citation handles the traffic ticket. Use that full assignment when looking for request forms and preparing your course certificate.

Find the matching official website

Use our Texas court directory to find a guide matching the complete court name. Open the official links from that guide, check the agency name and confirm that its case search matches your citation. Courts may use an external service provider for payments or requests; reach that service through the court’s official website.

If your citation is not found, contact the listed court. A recently issued citation may take time to appear online. An unsuccessful search does not change the appearance date or establish that the case was dismissed. Avoid trying several unrelated courts and paying the first result with a similar name.

Ask for the driving safety option before enrolling

Once the court is confirmed, review its driving safety course request instructions. Ask whether the specific offense is eligible, what documents and court costs are needed, and how you will receive approval. A request submission, course purchase and court approval are separate steps.

Harris County’s official site distinguishes its DSC application from ordinary citation payment and tells applicants to wait for court approval before taking the course. Other courts publish their own request paths. Follow the process for your assigned court and the deadline on your notice.

Save the approval and plan your completion packet

Keep the approval order with the citation. Record the full court name, approved offense, due date, required certificate copy, driving-record type and submission method. If several charges appear on the citation, confirm which ones the approval covers.

After you finish the course, review and sign the court copy as required. Submit it with every other document the court ordered, save delivery confirmation and ask the court how to check receipt and the final case outcome.
